The altitude at which a parachutist opens the canopy may differ, but two,five hundred feet is typical. With most parachutes, the skydiver initiates deployment by throwing a pilot chute in to the airstream (other parachutes have pilot chutes which are immediately released by pulling an attached wire). The pilot chute is a little chute opened by air
